The other morning in a walk about of Copenhagen I discovered an urban gem. Like history, architecture, peace, quiet and natural beauty. Check out the “Citadel” The Kastellat or Citadel was built in 1664 and actively in use as a fort into the mid 1800’s. Today it still houses military activities, but it’s primary functions are a park and historical site.
The Kastellet is one of the best preserved fortresses in Northern Europe. It is constructed in the form of a pentagon with bastions at its corners.

The site is full of history, pageantry and due to it’s location incredible views of surrounding Copenhagen. It’s open spaces are peaceful, well laid out, welcoming and offer incredible glimpses into the past and current Copenhagen.

The windmill was built in 1847 by master carpenter Fritz Christian Balslöv and was a replacement for two earlier mills. Since the 18th century, they had been responsible for the flour supply to Kastellet’s bakery in Søndre Magasin. The mill is Copenhagen’s last mill.

Need a space to chill, within the midst of Copenhagen’s central city and the waterfront- check out the Kastellet. History, nature, peace and perspective are everpresent.
